Joy Behar was born in 1942 as Josephine Victoria Occhiuto in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the only child of an Italian-American Roman Catholic family. Her father, Gino Occhiuto, drove trucks for Coca-Cola, and her mother, Rose (née Carbone), was a seamstress.
Early in the 1980s, Behar began working in the entertainment industry as a receptionist before moving on to become a producer for Good Morning America.
She performed stand-up comedy and made appearances on The New Show, a brief-lived Lorne Michaels NBC production, as well as Good Morning America on ABC.

She was the host of the various discussion programs Way Off Broadway on Lifetime Television in 1987, which included writer and actor Larry David.
Barbara Walters and Joy Behar co-created the ABC daytime talk show The View, and Behar joined the panel as one of the founding members in 1997. Behar eventually transitioned into a permanent co-host after initially just appearing on days when Walters was off.

On August 25, 2015, ABC revealed that Behar will make a comeback as a regular co-host beginning with the 19th season’s September 8 debut.
She began filling in on a sporadic basis as a guest host on Larry King Live in 2007.
