Vladimír Munk was born on 27 February 1925 v Pardubice. He lived there until he was seventeen years old when, along with his parents and the rest of the Jews of Pardubice, he was deported to Terezín in December 1942.

The Munk family was then taken from there to the extermination camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau in the autumn of 1944, where both of his parents were gassed to death. Vladimir, who was nineteen at the time, was moved by the Nazis to work in a satellite camp in Gleiwitz (current-day Gliwice).

He waited for the liberators at yet another Blechhammer outpost camp, which is now known as Sawicice. Vladimir returned to Pardubice, completed an expedited summer semester of secondary school, and then departed for Prague in the fall of 1945 to pursue a career in chemistry. He tracked down Kitty, whom he had met while being interned in Terezn, and the two got married in 1949.

 

He spent twenty years conducting a study, for which he was awarded a national prize. In August 1968, he made the decision to immigrate. He moved to the United States with his entire family, working as a professor at the State University of New York College in Plattsburgh until his retirement.

He purposefully avoided talking about the Holocaust and visited Auschwitz for the first time again in January 2020, 75 years after it had occurred. His closest relatives perished at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp—more than thirty of them.

However, they split up once more in the spring of 1947 when Kitty and her parents immigrated to America. Kitty returned to Prague when she turned 21 in June 1949 and they were married there in November. Paul (1950) and Peter (1950) are our two boys (1956).

 

Vladimir Munk traveled to the United States in 1969 with his family. There, both sons completed their educations before getting married and starting families. In January 2015, his wife passed away due to an Alzheimer’s disease complication.
