Robert J. Wagner was born in Detroit Michigan, on February 10, 1930, the son of a steel executive. When he was seven, his family relocated to Los Angeles. Always wanting to be an actor, he worked a variety of jobs while pursuing his dream, but it was while dining with his parents at a Beverly Hills restaurant that he was “discovered” by a talent scout. Wagner was signed by 20th Century Fox after making his uncredited screen debut in The Happy Years (1950). He was comfortable playing romantic leads, but it wasn’t until he played a shell-shocked war veteran in With a Song in My Heart (1952) that he broke out.
Robert Jr. Wagner was sent to California before the rest of the family. He was loaded onto a train by himself and literally shipped out of the Hollywood Military Academy. Robert would attend four different military schools in Southern California, and many of his classmates were famous actors’ children. Wagner received his high school diploma from Saint Monica Catholic School in 1949.

In his memoirs, Wagner claimed that he had affairs with Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Collins, and other well-known entertainers. In December 1957, he married Natalie Wood, and the couple divorced in 1962. In July 1963, Wagner married Marion Marshall, with whom he had one daughter, Katie. They split up in 1971. November 2011 after Davern, the boat’s captain, publicly stated that he had lied to police during the initial investigation and had witnessed Wood and Wagner arguing that evening. He claimed that Wood had been flirting with Walken, which enraged Wagner, and that after Wood went missing, Davern claimed Wagner was to blame for Wood’s death.
