Johnny Depp floats into the 2022 MTV VMAs

Johnny Depp floats into the 2022 MTV VMAs: On Sunday night, Johnny Depp entered the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards dressed as the eponymous Moon person. Depp makes his first significant public appearance since June, when a jury found in his favor in a defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard, in the “surprise” part, which had been leaked days earlier.

Graphics promoting the upcoming performances flashed over the screen as an astronaut descended through the air above the stage after Lizzo’s opening performance of “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready),” from her album Special. The Moonman’s visor peeled open to display a live visual of Depp’s face within the helmet once the last artist was named.

You know what, hey? To applause from the audience, Depp said. “I needed the work.”

After the commercials, Depp reappeared and demanded, “Hey VMAs, let’s get back to the f—-ing music, will we?,” before removing the Moonperson visor.

Depp, 59, was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages in June after suing Heard for referring to herself in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed as a “public figure symbolizing domestic abuse” without mentioning Depp by name. The jury also gave Depp $5 million in punitive damages, but the court only imposed the maximum fine allowed by Virginia law—$350,000—on Depp.

Heard won her countersuit against Depp and received compensatory damages of $2 million. She most recently retained a new legal group to challenge the judgment.
