When his family moved back to Los Angeles, where his uncle Emil Newman was a conductor and his uncles Lionel and Alfred Newman wrote film soundtracks, Newman was still a small kid. He had been born in Los Angeles but had been transported to New Orleans as an infant. He worked as a staff songwriter for a publishing firm while pursuing his studies in musical composition at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Although his early singles as a musician didn’t do well commercially, they inspired cover versions by artists like Harry Nilsson and Three Dog Night (whose song “Mama Told Me Not to Come” topped the charts).
