Morris was introduced to the blues by Garrett’s grandfather, a Methodist church minister. According to Garrett, by the time he was four or five years old, “[he] was singing the gospel AND the blues.” Morris graduated from Dillard University and the Juilliard School of Music in 1958. He relocated to New York in the late 1950s and joined the Harry Belafonte Singers. Morris underwent surgery to stabilize his condition before surgeons could remove the bullet because he “had no detectable blood pressure” when they got to the hospital. Garrett was in the hospital for more than a month and shot a scene for “Martin” while lying in bed. In connection with the incident, Morris has undergone at least eight surgeries.
