Jones was born on August 19, 1927, in Beaumont, Texas, to railroad worker Justus Ellis McQueen Sr. and Jessie Paralee (Stephens) Stephens.

His mother died at a hospital in 1931 after an auto accident. After serving in the US Navy from 1945 to 1946, Jones attended Lamar Junior College and Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas, before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin in 1950 and 1951.

Before opting to pursue acting, he performed stand-up comedy, tried his hand at professional baseball and football for a spell, and even tried his hand at ranching in Nicaragua after getting in touch with his former college roommate, Fess Parker.
